With his second attempt of the evening, Nadeem delivered a throw that not only shattered records but also ensured that his competitors were left trailing, unable to surpass his mark.
In a surprising turn of events, India’s Neeraj Chopra, the closest competitor to Nadeem, could not retain his Olympic title. His best effort fell short by over three meters, landing at 89.45 meters. Meanwhile, Anderson Peters from Grenada claimed the bronze medal. Julian Weber of Germany, who aspired to improve upon his fourth-place finish at the 2021 Tokyo Games, finished in sixth place.
The final was of exceptional quality, with the performances of the top five throwers surpassing the gold medal mark set in Tokyo. Their remarkable efforts on Thursday would have seen any of them crowned champion.
The longstanding Olympic record, which had been unchallenged since Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway’s impressive 90.57-meter throw at the 2008 Beijing Games, was finally bested. Thorkildsen’s throw had earned him his second consecutive Olympic title.
