Young Europeans Increasingly Turn to AI Chatbots for Emotional Support: Survey Insights
A growing number of young people across Europe are relying on artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots as a source of emotional support, according to a recent survey. The findings highlight a significant shift in how younger generations are managing mental health and personal challenges in the digital age.
AI Chatbots Becoming a New Emotional Outlet
The survey, conducted among 3,800 individuals aged 11 to 25 in countries including France, Germany, Sweden, and Ireland, revealed that nearly half of respondents have used AI tools to discuss personal or emotional issues. Around 51% said they found it easy to talk about mental health concerns with chatbots—slightly higher than those who preferred speaking with healthcare professionals (49%) and significantly more than those comfortable with psychologists (37%).
Despite this trend, traditional human connections still play a crucial role. A majority of participants reported that they feel most comfortable sharing their concerns with friends (68%) and family members (61%), indicating that personal relationships remain central to emotional well-being.
Why Young People Prefer AI for Support
One of the main reasons behind this shift is the accessibility and non-judgmental nature of AI chatbots. Users can interact with these tools anytime without fear of criticism or stigma. In fact, about 90% of those surveyed had already used AI in some form, with many describing chatbots as “confidants” or even “life advisers.”
The convenience of instant responses and privacy makes AI particularly appealing to younger users who may hesitate to seek traditional mental health support.
Rising Mental Health Concerns Among Youth
The survey also sheds light on growing mental health challenges. Approximately 28% of respondents met the criteria for suspected generalized anxiety disorder, underlining the urgent need for accessible mental health resources.
This increasing reliance on AI tools may reflect gaps in traditional support systems, including barriers such as cost, availability, and social stigma.
Experts Warn Against Overdependence on AI
While AI chatbots can provide helpful guidance and emotional comfort, experts caution against replacing human interaction with technology. Specialists emphasize that AI systems are designed for engagement rather than comprehensive mental healthcare.
Researchers warn that overreliance on chatbots could lead to social isolation and may not adequately address complex emotional needs. AI lacks the ability to fully understand human emotions or respond appropriately in critical situations, making professional care and real-life relationships irreplaceable.

As AI technology continues to evolve, its role in mental health support is expected to expand. However, experts stress the importance of using these tools as a supplement—not a substitute—for human connection and professional therapy.
