Snow in the Sand! Pakistan’s Famous Nushki Desert Sees Snowfall After 20 Years

Pakistan has witnessed yet another rare and astonishing weather phenomenon, with snowfall recorded in the desert regions of Nushki district in Balochistan. Local inhabitants reported that this marks the first occurrence of snow in nearly two decades, rendering the event both extraordinary and unforgettable for the community. The snowfall transformed vast expanses of arid sand dunes into a picturesque, snow-blanketed landscape. Many individuals were left in awe by the abrupt shift, as deserts are typically associated with hot and dry climates rather than frigid winter conditions. Videos and images of this unusual sight rapidly circulated, depicting snow resting on desert terrain where such visuals are nearly unheard of. This rare snowfall illustrates the shifting and unpredictable weather trends being observed throughout Pakistan.

In recent years, the nation has faced extreme heat, heavy rainfall, flooding, and now this rare snowfall in unexpected locales. Although Pakistan contributes minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, it remains one of the nations most susceptible to climate change. In recent years, the nation has experienced consecutive climate-related extreme weather events, ranging from severe summer rainstorms and flooding to more intense winter conditions. This season’s cold wave has resulted in snowfall and hailstorms across various regions, including places where such weather is usually rare.

In addition to Nushki’s unusual desert snowfall, urban areas in Swat reportedly received snow for the first time in 16 years, while Gargari near Karak experienced snowfall after 25 years, with temperatures in Karak plummeting to -2°C.

At the same time, Battagram has endured significant snowfall, with reports indicating accumulations of up to four feet in certain areas, leaving residents trapped indoors. Power outages have persisted for two days, and authorities have closed sections of the Karakoram Highway due to dangerous conditions, restricting travel on that route.

Uncommon hailstorms have also been documented in parts of Punjab, with reports indicating that Attock experienced hail for the first time in 40 years and Bhakkar after 42 years.

Authorities have urged individuals in affected regions to refrain from unnecessary travel, adhere to local advisories, and take additional precautions as temperatures remain low and road conditions continue to present hazards.
