Karachi to Introduce 500 Electric Buses and Double-Decker Buses to Modernize Public Transport

Karachi: The Sindh government has announced an ambitious plan to expand Karachi’s public transportation network by introducing 500 electric buses and a fleet of double-decker buses, aiming to provide commuters with a safer, cleaner, and more efficient travel experience.

The initiative forms part of the provincial government’s broader strategy to improve urban infrastructure and address the growing transportation needs of Pakistan’s largest city.

Major Investment in Karachi’s Development

Speaking about the upcoming projects, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the provincial government has allocated more than Rs100 billion for Karachi’s development in the 2026-27 budget.

The funding will support a range of projects, including road rehabilitation, drainage improvements, water supply upgrades, and enhancements to the city’s public transport system.

500 Electric Buses to Improve Urban Mobility

According to the government, the addition of 500 electric buses is expected to significantly strengthen Karachi’s public transport network. The new buses will offer commuters a modern and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional diesel-powered vehicles.

Electric buses produce lower emissions, helping reduce air pollution while also lowering long-term operating costs. The move aligns with global efforts to promote sustainable urban transportation.

Double-Decker Buses to Increase Passenger Capacity

Alongside the electric buses, the government plans to introduce double-decker buses on selected routes across Karachi. These buses are expected to accommodate a larger number of passengers, particularly during peak commuting hours.

Officials believe the increased seating capacity will help ease congestion on busy routes and improve the overall travel experience for daily commuters.

Boost for Economic Activity and Employment

The government also expects the transport expansion to create employment opportunities in multiple sectors. Jobs are likely to be generated through vehicle operations, maintenance services, infrastructure development, and related industries.

Officials say improved transportation can also support economic growth by making travel more reliable and reducing commuting times for workers and businesses.

Focus on Sustainable Urban Development

The planned transport projects are part of Sindh’s long-term vision to modernize Karachi’s infrastructure while promoting environmentally responsible development. By investing in cleaner public transport and expanding passenger capacity, the government aims to improve the quality of life for millions of residents.

If implemented as planned, the new electric and double-decker buses will mark one of the most significant upgrades to Karachi’s public transportation system in recent years.
