From Miss Chandni to Gangubai: Four iconic onscreen sari looks

Saris exude grace, elegance and finesse. The garb has been a popular choice for celebrities from the beginning of time, be it at weddings, fashion runways or on the red carpet. The drape has found new variations in modern times, ranging from the lehenga sari to sari pants and belted saris. Saris, apart from real life, have also found a special place in Bollywood frames. Here is a rundown of the four most iconic on-screen sari looks of all time.

1.    Sushmita in ‘Main Hoon Na’

Her chiselled physique perfect for a sari, Sushmita Sen sported some swoon-worthy looks in the 2004 blockbuster. Rocking a red and silver sari for the song Miss Chandni Ki Ada, we are yet to see a more stylish professor. With her hair flying and a black necklace highlighting her collar bones, the star was a visual treat in a chiffon drape that featured intricate silver edging, a flowing pallu and a white embellished blouse. Subtle makeup and flats rounded off her look.

2.    Alia in ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’

This one will go down in the fashion books for being one of the most classic sari looks donned by a celebrity for a film. The all-white crisp sari radiated elegance and boss lady vibes, both traits synonymous to Alia Bhatt’s character of Gangubai. The white blouse comprised of a sweetheart neckline and the sari was of chikan fabric. Simple and iconic, we loved everything about her look. A crimped hair look and red bindi added to the finishing touches.

3.    Aishwarya and Madhuri in ‘Devdas’

Identically dressed in the evergreen song Dola Re Dola Re from the film Devdas, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit Nene delivered looks that are remembered to date. Both beauties were clad in heavily ornamented saris, and chunky traditional jewellery and wore a red pout. Sporting heavily embellished red blouses and cream-coloured saris, the stars were a delight to watch on the big screen as they served memorable moves in the dance number.

4. Priyanka in ‘Dostana’

Dressed in a contemporary look, Priyanka Chopra slayed in a champagne-coloured sari in the song Desi Girl. The super hit track is what aptly gave her the name of Bollywood’s ‘Desi Girl’. The sari featured a strappy, halter neck blouse that was complete in shimmer and sparkly rings. The finishing of the ensemble consisted of the same bling, making her look nothing short of glamorous.
